On 21 May 2025, Tlde Technologies formally commenced operations in India. This note records what we set out to do, so that it can be checked against later.
The shape of the company
Tlde is a product development company. We originate our own platforms, build them in-house and hold equity in every one. That sounds administrative and is not: it determines what we are willing to start, how long we are prepared to spend on foundations nobody would agree to pay for separately, and whether we are able to stop when the evidence says a direction is wrong.
Portfolios like this are unfashionable for a reason. They are harder to explain to investors than a single-product company, and they fail when the shared infrastructure never materialises and the portfolio turns out to be three unrelated startups sharing a landlord. We are aware of that failure mode. The test we hold ourselves to is straightforward: the third product should be meaningfully cheaper to build than the first.
Why these three problems
We are starting with identity, discovery and community publishing. They look unrelated. They are not.
Each is a place where the standard approach depended on collecting and retaining large amounts of personal data, and where that assumption is now being withdrawn — by India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, by the enforcement curve on GDPR, by browsers removing third-party cookies, and by an audience that has become considerably less willing.
When an assumption that broad gets withdrawn, the products built on it do not adapt gracefully. They get replaced. We would rather build the replacements than watch someone else do it.
- Identity. Verification is becoming mandatory across finance, marketplaces and public services at exactly the moment that holding a biometric database became a liability. The resolution is matching without retention.
- Discovery. Ranking on engagement produced a web few people enjoy and advertising that is increasingly difficult to defend legally. Explicit signals — what someone is actively looking for — are cheaper to collect and hold up better.
- Community. Enormous numbers of people run a building, a school or a club inside a chat thread that loses everything past yesterday. The information is worth keeping; the container was never built to keep it.
What we are not claiming
We are at the beginning. The platforms are in active development, not at scale, and we have no interest in describing them otherwise. Anyone evaluating us at this point is underwriting a team, a thesis and an engineering standard — not a traction chart.
We would rather be specific about that now than manage the disappointment later.
